MUMMY ALEBI
When a fire destroys her beloved restaurant on New Year’s Day, Nigerian-Canadian matriarch Elizabeth “Mummy Alebi” Balogun faces the daunting task of starting over. For years, Alebi African Cuisine was more than a place to eat, it was a cultural hub, a space of mentorship, and a home away from home for many of the West African diaspora in the Vancouver area and beyond. Despite personal tragedy and immense obstacles, Elizabeth’s faith and resilience, along with her family’s and community’s unwavering support allowed her to reopen just two months later. Mummy Alebi is a testament to the power of food, culture, and community in the face of loss.
